Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS)

ITBS, aka runner's knee, is an inflamatory overuse injury commonly felt on the outer (lateral) side of your knee. Usually the pain is at its' worst during knee flexion (ie. going down stairs).

Common causes include:

  • Leg Length differences
  • Flat Feet
  • Worn out footwear (ie. irregular soles)
  • Increasing workout duration/intensity too excessively
  • Running on banked surface (i.e. a running track)
  • Running on inclined, declined, or angled surfaces
  • Inadequate warmup/cooldown

[edit]Prevention and Prehab

Properly warming up before exercise and cooling down after, plus some stretching will help prevent this syndrome. Also not only is the POSE running technique a more efficient way of running, but if you are a runner, using this technique will greatly diminish the onset of ITBS from ever occurring.

....Damn. Sounds EXACTLY RIGHT.

>You can't break this type of lifestyle without a strong will, and I don't have one

Self-defeating thinking. The only way to have a strong will is to DECIDE that in fact you DO have the testicular fortitude to stick to your plans.

Anyone can have a strong will, you are just copping out by assuming you were inborn with a weak will. Will is a matter of determination, focus, and most of all belief in the fact that you do have self-control (even if right now you think you don't).

If you let yourself think you have a weak will, then you can easily rationalize quitting and/or failure. THIS is the self-defeating thinking I was talking about. Stop pussyfooting around and take responsibility for your actions, you didn't fail because you were born with a weak will, you failed because you haven't yet decided to stop being a child.

It was my hope that this post inspires you, not insults you, so I hope it came off in the right manner.

Anon knows what the hell Anon is talking about! Makes me wonder if my coworker ever posts on /fit/...

Subject:Concerning the creation of the universe and man's place in it:
Security:Public

"But when the work was finished, the Craftsman kept wishing that there were someone to ponder the plan of so great a work, to love its beauty, and to wonder at its vastness. Therefore, when everything was done... He finally took thought concerning the creation of man... He therefore took man as a creature of indeterminate nature and, assigning him a place in the middle of the world, addressed him thus: "Neither a fixed abode nor a form that is thine alone nor any function peculiar to thyself have we given thee, Adam, to the end that according to thy longing and according to thy judgement thou mayest have and possess what abode, what form and what functions thou thyself shalt desire. The nature of all other beings is limited and constrained within the bounds of law. Thou shalt have the power to degenerate into the lower forms of life, which are brutish. Thou shalt have the power, out of thy soul's judgement, to be born into the higher forms, which are divine." (Pico 224-225)

I would change "to be born into the higher forms" to "to be borne into the higher forms" personally. While I do not agree with the postulate that there is a Craftsman (or that said entity created 'Man' or 'Adam' with a purpose), I do agree that:

*Humans collectively have the power to create an objective framework of Laws (under which to collectively dwell) which dictates, places limits on, and constrains 'all other beings'
*Humans individually have the power, by choice (in this case indicated by 'thy soul's judgement'), to degenerate or regress (in my view, regression from Human to an 'other being')
*Humans individually (and, uniquely) have the power to ascend (or, be 'borne into') into _A_ higher form (be that from 'other being' to 'Human' or indeed 'Human' to a so-called 'Post-human'), also by choice

I feel that humans are unique (in our capacities, which may or may not have evolved over time as a result of the biological systems we appear to be made up of and which may indeed present itself again - or already has), and gifted with one crucial gift: that of personal choice.

From mental hop to mental hop, the seed thought from my comic-reading led me to read about the history of Carl Jung. I was captivated! Individuation, as described by Jung, makes worlds of sense. I've posted the Wiki excerpt here, along with the contextual links. Goodness but I love Chrome's copy/paste! :)

Carl Jung on individuation

According to Jungian psychology, individuation is the process of transforming one’s psyche by bringing the personal and collective unconscious into conscious.[1]Individuation has a holistic healing effect on the person, both mentally and physically.[1]

Individuation is a process of psychological differentiation, having for its goal the development of the individual personality. "In general, it is the process by which individual beings are formed and differentiated; in particular, it is the development of the psychological individual as a being distinct from the general, collective psychology." [2]

Besides achieving physical and mental health[1], people who have advanced towards individuation, they tend to become harmonious, mature, responsible, they promote freedom and justice and have a good understanding about the workings of human nature and the universe.[3]

Mood: contemplative

This is an adjustment, to be sure. It has been almost three months (tomorrow) since we parted ways - in the intervening time I've had to abandon the former lifestyle and roommates. Today, I share an awesome apartment with my goody buddy Jason and my pets... I'm THAT guy.

I've noticed (especially as Jason is off cavorting) that my life possesses a lot of downtime. Attempting to fill this time is difficult at best, made worse by my lack of connection to the Internet and reduced social circle. What this leaves me with at the end of the day is a full measure of free time against which long-running excuses against improvement fall flat.

As it turns out, I find it difficult to self-motivate. All excuses aside when left to my own devices I will tend to do whatever will require the least investment... This does not work without ready access to media sources, however. I am beginning to experience life in a way that more closely resembles what my good friend Ed chose willingly. That is, a life without constant distraction.

I know that this time, like times before it, can serve as a great tool for my personal advancement. I know it deep in my gut, my heart, and even my brain.

This time I have available to me... I detest it. Ever the petulant child, I prefer to wallow in life regardless of the negative side-effects. My challenge, now, is against myself and my competing desires. Enter the classic angel/demon perched on my shoulder, with wafts of greasy and salty fried Jack in the Box to torment and distract me from my life's goals.

Verily, yea, I can consumeth of the fine flesh. The respite from a limited diet would be as waves crashing down upon the rocks - but in their ebb, they take from the stones their very strength. I tempt fate with each bite as though I were a raging alcoholic looking for an opening..

As times come and pass, these influences will change and grow. I have certainly been through this before and can succeed again. If I do not waver in my resolve, if consistent progress can continue to be made, I will be looking back on these times as I did those that came before. Else and I will be looking back in hopes of finding where it all went wrong.

Subject:Neologism: Event Horizon Conflict
Security:Public

An Event Horizon Conflict is given to be the point in time at which a decision is made when either answer will sufficiently propel events - including decisions made through indecision.

Just as light approaching a black hole approaches it's Event Horizon, conversations progressing through the 4th dimension approach conversational Event Horizons. When light approaches and skates at the Event Horizon we understand/believe that a duplicate of that waveform enters the black hole while the waveform itself can continue unharmed - unless it entirely crosses the event horizon. At conversational Event Horizons, the conversation approaches this same point, given a slightly different understanding (but, backwards compatible).

During a conversational Event Horizon, the conversation progresses to the point at which a 'perceived truth' is mentioned (light approaching). Within the conversation, the speaker who brought up the 'perceived truth' can either continue or await a response (light not yet touching Event Horizon but still has the possibility of touching the Event Horizon as it is unknown where it specifically is) from the other parties. This response, like light, can go one of 'two' ways (just as the light itself could) - positively or negatively for the conversation. The listener can choose to believe the speaker's perceived truth or disbelieve it (still 'approaching').

This yields a situation in which attempting to prove the truth (or disprove it) will irrevocably alter the conversation as it attempts to prove whether or not the light has approached the event horizon or not. However, the only proof is in external observation of the events as neither party involved is capable of proving or disproving 'perceived truth' without knowledge of the full extent of both outcomes after the event horizon. Either party in the conversation represents the potential of light at the event horizon - it either continues into the black hole or continues outside of it (whether or not this will eventually lead to all matter in our universe being sucked into a black hole is still debateable). It cannot be proved by a 'mere man' what happens to the waveform of light as it approaches the event horizon but we believe that a copy of it is made and continues into the black hole - even as the light which does not continue in continues instead on.

The question is this - are you 100% certain that light cannot escape a black hole versus 100% certain that light CAN escape a black hole versus perhaps you cannot make this distinction as a universal truth 100% accurate without further information which may change your answer later.

Three options - heads/tails and edge.

Conflicts and arguments, ultimately, can track back to a perceived truth wherein an improvable postulate approaches a second improvable postulate....

And explode.
